This year, a portion of the proceeds will benefit two great local charities, Kate's Hope, and Learn to Read of Saint Lucie County.
Kate O’Connor, a single mother of a 12-year old daughter and active community volunteer, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2004. After undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and extensive surgeries, a $200,000 stem cell transplant was her only chance to survive the rare form of cancer. However, her insurance company considers this an experimental treatment and has refused to cover the cost. The Moffitt Cancer Center pledged a $100,000 grant for Kate’s treatment, and Kate’s HOPE has raised almost $90,000, allowing Kate to receive this life saving treatment. Kate is continuing to recover from this devastating disease, and Kate’s HOPE is working to raise additional funds to cover her remaining medical and living expenses.

| Learn to Read of St. Lucie
County is a non-profit corporation established in 1981 when our
founder, Dorothy Brennan, read in the newspaper that a woman had given an
overdose of medication to her child because she could not read the perscription
bottle instructions. Her goal was to improve literacy skills of the residents of
our community and that is our goal today. |
